Dallas, Texas, USA (August 12, 2009) -- Remmers Baustofftechnik GmbH was awarded the contract to supply coatings for the Bandra Worli Sea Link
Bridge in India. It is estimated that 120,000 liters of Remmers’ Funcosil® Betonacryl will be required to cover the 5.6
km long bridge. This waterborne coating is formulated with Mowilith® pure acrylic emulsion from Celanese
Emulsion Polymers.
“We were quite pleased to be awarded the coatings contract for such a high-profile
project,” said Harry van Dijken, export director from Remmers. “A combination of our excellent reputation as a coatings manufacturer, the high quality of our products
and our local representation in India were crucial to securing the business,” van Dijken said.
Remmers chose its Funcosil® Betonacryl coating because it met all of the durability
and weathering requirements for the historic Indian project. The premium coating features very good exterior durability including resistance to driving rain and
splash resistance, certified according to DIN standards, listed in BAST (ZTV-SIB). On the technical side, the coating has high carbon dioxide diffusion resistance (sd value>252m) while
also offering low water vapour resistance (sd value<0,3m) and a low water absorption coefficient.
Remmers chose Mowilith® pure acrylic emulsion to ensure the coating’s ability
to withstand the severe weather of the region, especially during the extremely wet monsoon season. The basic properties of the emulsion were essential for use in the open sea environment to protect the
coating from waves splashing against the structure as the bridge stretches across the Arabian Sea from
the cities of Bandra to Worli, in the suburbs of Mumbai. “Celanese Emulsions and Remmers have a long, successful history together and the coating used on the
Sea Link Bridge is a positive outcome of that relationship,” said David Faust, market manager from Celanese
Emulsion Polymers. “Celanese emulsions have been trusted for decades for use in Europe and we are excited to be affiliated
with such a significant project here in India,” Faust said.
The bridge was officially opened on June 30, 2009, but the painting work is
expected to continue throughout the remainder of the year, depending upon the extent of the rainy season. It is estimated that the passengers in 125,000 vehicles a day could view the new paint. The color a shade of gray.
