and NEW YORK CITY (May 11, 2010) -- Celanese Corporation (NYSE: CE), a leading, global chemical
company, today announced its five-year Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) sustainability goals for
the areas of occupational safety performance, energy intensity, greenhouse gases (GHGs) and waste management
for the year 2015.
“Celanese has remained on-course to meet or exceed our aggressive
2010 sustainability goals,” said Dave Weidman, chairman and CEO, Celanese. “Building on that foundation,
we are setting new, equally aggressive targets for 2015. We are expanding our strategic internal programs to reduce energy, GHGs and waste intensity while maintaining
our strong economic position. We believe this demonstrates that significant environmental improvements
are both achievable and compatible with the corporation’s growth and financial performance.”
2015
EHS Goals
The company’s 2015 EHS sustainability goals include (from
a 2010 baseline value):
- Energy: 20% decrease in intensity over five
years
- GHGs: 20% decrease in intensity over five years
- Waste: 25%
decrease in intensity over five years
- Air Emissions: 25% decrease in intensity over
five years
- OIR (OSHA incident rate): 0.07; a decrease of 70 percent from the 2010
goal of 0.22
- LTIR (lost time incident rate): 0.0

per year in sustainable productivity improvements.
- Customers:
Celanese delivers product innovation from low-VOC, low-odor products such as our EcoVAE® water-based emulsions to “green” solutions for extreme
and mainstream plastics applications. These applications are delivering innovative technology advancements
that enable customers to create high-quality, eco-friendly products.

Sustainability Report highlights chemical industry leadership
In announcing
its 2015 EHS sustainability goals, Celanese also announces the release of its updated 2010
Sustainability Report detailing the corporation’s industry-leading accomplishments that are driving
industry leading safety performance as well as award-winning accomplishments in environmental stewardship
across the company’s global operations.
In this year’s report, Celanese highlights
the company’s premier performance in key areas, including:
- Safety
leadership: safety is a precondition for everything Celanese does as the company continues to
seek ways to keep people, property and communities safe. Safety is one of the company’s core values,
and keeping safety at the forefront is accomplished through vigilance, prevention, training and awareness
programs. For 2009, Celanese reached an OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) safety
incident rate of 0.22, the leader among chemical industry peers.
- Energy
reduction: Celanese is on track to exceed its 2010 energy intensity reduction goal of 20 percent
from its 2005 baseline value. By year-end 2009, Celanese achieved a 19-percent reduction. Based on industry
benchmark data, Celanese has one of the most aggressive reduction goals in the chemical industry.
- Environmental
protection: from air emissions and GHGs to waste and water management, Celanese continues to reflect
the company’s core values by committing to long-term environmental stewardship. The 2010 Sustainability
Report provides detailed examples of the company’s energy, air, waste and water reduction progress and
successes.
Recent ACC Recognition
Celanese
was awarded on May 5, 2010, the American Chemistry Council’s 2010 Responsible Care Initiative of the
Year Award based on the company’s continuous progress in safety and environmental sustainability.
In
2009, the ACC created the Initiative of the Year Award to recognize those companies
that have undertaken specific programs or activities that demonstrate leadership in the areas of employee
health and safety, security or environmental protection in the chemical industry.
